With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about your pre-festive season cleaning.
A clean home is a welcoming home, so a deep clean is essential if you’re hosting Christmas gatherings this year. As this is the first Christmas with Covid that we’re able to socialise as we wish, it’s especially important to be organised about your cleaning plans to help keep potential germs at bay.
Ensure your home is ready for festive entertaining with our Christmas cleaning checklist.
Give the kitchen a Christmas clean
Your kitchen becomes the star of the show at the Christmas. The place where you’ll cook up your festive feasts, it’s essential to have it sparkling clean.
The oven is one of the most dreaded cleaning jobs, but a dirty oven can affect the taste of your food and create a pungent smoky smell in your home. You also won’t be able to quickly check on your cooking with a grimy oven door. Use a high-quality oven cleaning product and follow the instructions carefully. If your oven is very dirty, you may need to repeat this several times.
You should also have a thorough fridge and freezer clear-out before the festive season. You’ll need plenty of space to store your Christmas food, and a dirty fridge increases the risk of poor-tasting food – and even food poisoning. You should empty the contents of your fridge-freezer, removing all drawers and shelves, and clean these and the interior with warm water and washing up liquid.
Don’t forget to wipe down worktops with antibacterial spray and hoover and mop the floor before guests arrive.
Clean your guest bedrooms
If you have family and friends staying over during the festive period, they’ll want to stay in a clean and tidy room. The first step is to declutter – remove all personal belongings that you store in spare rooms during the year. You should wash the bedsheets ready for their arrival, and provide clean towels for your guests to use.
Don’t forget to hoover and dust, and shut pets out of the room after you’ve done this.
Thoroughly clean the bathroom
Nothing will disgust your guests like a dirty bathroom. Give the toilet that visitors will use a deep clean, including the toilet, sink and taps. Tiles and surfaces should be disinfected, and the floor hoovered and mopped. Make sure that you provide a full soap dispenser and a clean hand towel for guests to wash their hands.
If you have guests staying, your shower should be sparkling clean too. Use high-quality products to clean the tiles, shower and remove limescale.
Clean and tidy your living room
Your living room is the social hub of your Christmas gatherings, so for maximum comfort, it needs to be clean. Vacuum your carpet, rugs, sofas, cushions and other upholstery. Remove all clutter from the room and dust surfaces, and keep pets off sofas and armchairs to keep them clean of hair.
